Life Story in Kinship Care

We know that becoming a Kinship Carer impacts you and your family’s life greatly. We also recognise that for you as the Kinship Carer there will be a whole range of emotions coming into play – concern for children’s wellbeing, your own feelings about how they have come into your care, and most of all a fierce, protective love for the children.

It’s understandable that it can be hard to know where to start when trying to explain to children what has happened, what it means for them, and their understanding of their family and their future.

Life story is a method used to record the details about children’s history and personal development. It is a record of their life in words, pictures and photos made by the children with help from their Kinship Carer.

Kinship Care Advice Service for Scotland (KCASS) and the Foundation for Families (FFF) project have developed some suggested ideas to help you think and start having important conversations with children about their life. We have set out some details about the benefits, why it is important and some ideas of activities you could do with them.
