Objectives of KCASS

In KCASS, we are committed to providing the best possible advice and support service for all Kinship Families and the Practitioners who support them throughout Scotland.

At KCASS we are:

  • Improving outcomes for Kinship Care Families.
  • Managing and delivering an agile service for Kinship Families to ensure that children grow up loved, safe and respected so that they realise their full potential.
  • Raising the profile of Kinship Care across the country and celebrating the difference made to the lives of those in Kinship Care.

In order to achieve the above KCASS will provide the following – our objectives are:

1: Advice service
2: Support for Children and Young People living in Kinship Care
3: Tailored Kinship Carer support
4: Advisory group
5: Tailored support for kinship care practitioners
6: Kinship Care Week
7: Governance and leadership

We will provide a service that offers high quality advice and guidance in appropriate ways through appropriate channels at appropriate times through:

  • Providing a dedicated telephone helpline and email service for Kinship Families offering emotional support, practical, financial and legal advice
  • Providing advice and tailored information for Kinship Families through the dedicated Kinship.Scot website

We will provide support for Children and Young People living in Kinship Care is tailored to their needs, informed by Children and Young People themselves and making use of any existing networks of local or national services by:

  • Planning events within communities’ where opportunities arise
  • Establishing Groups for Children and Young People living in Kinship Families
  • Supporting Practitioners to improve Kinship experience for Children and Young People.
  • Developing partnerships with carer groups throughout Scotland. Increasing awareness and understanding of KCASS services.
  • Actively implementing ‘The Promise’ in all KCASS activities.

We will provide dedicated services; events, training and readily accessed information for Kinship Care Families across the whole of Scotland 

We have established and support an Advisory Group of Kinship Carers who actively participate in the governance and development of the service.

We provide leadership and direction for organisations that support Kinship Families, and support Practitioners to develop their knowledge, skills and promote an effective professional network by

  • Providing advice, information and guidance
  • An active and engaging Practitioners Forum
  • training/workshops
  • Dedicated Practitioners area on our website containing good practice and legal briefings.

We lead on the development and delivery of Kinship Care Week in March of each year, in collaboration with the Scottish Government, local authorities, Kinship Carers and other key stakeholders to raise awareness of Kinship Care and celebrate the difference it is making

KCASS is directed by our Steering Group made up of representatives from KCASS, Our Advisory Group and Scottish Government. Its role is to:

  • Review the Strategic and Operational Plans
  • Provide reports of activity of the service
  • Devise Communications/marketing and Communities plan

KCASS will seek and ask for feedback from all of those who use the service to ensure we achieve what we have set out above. All feedback is welcomed and feeds into improvements and developments where these have been suggested.
