Kinship Care Advisory Group

The Kinship Care Advice Service for Scotland have a well-established Advisory Group which is central to the way KCASS operates.

This group ensures that the views of people with lived experience of Kinship Care directly influence the way the service is managed and run including feeding into and having representation on the KCASS steering group.

The group currently has 13 active members, 2 reference group members and they all have experience of Kinship Care mainly being Kinship Carers themselves.

In addition to ensuring the service continues to meet the support needs of Kinship Families, the group also has a significant role to play in all areas affecting Kinship Families. This includes:

  • Providing an avenue for raising current matters which affect Kinship families and deciding the best approach available for achieving positive outcomes.
  • Helping to improve the experience of Kinship Carers and the children they look after.
  • Giving Kinship Carers the opportunity to highlight matters that have arisen in their areas, identifying how these can be best addressed and agreeing action required.
  • Working with KCASS to directly influence and inform national policy and practice and liaise with other policy/ practice forums.
  • Helping to ensure that the voice of Kinship Carers is properly represented in consultations and research forums.
  • To represent all Kinship Care voices in order to guide decisions about events, training and information that KCASS makes available.
  • To promote links between KCASS and those with lived experience of kinship care (as children, young people or carers) in all parts of Scotland.

We would be delighted to hear from anyone who wishes to become a member of the group, all members will be committed to improving the experience of Kinship Carers and the children they care for, have lived experience of Kinship Care, can commit to quarterly meetings, and can share the views of others in Kinship Care and influence Kinship Care policy and practice.

Anyone interested in finding out a little more about this group can contact supportline@childrenfirst.org.uk

The Advisory group have been instrumental in developing the What now? booklet which can be viewed here and is available to any Kinship Carer and professional working with Kinship Care families.
